Visit the buildings of the Jihlava Town Hall, the place where the history of the city was written.

Between 1233 and 1240, Jihlava was established as a royal mining town. The history of the Jihlava Town Hall dates back to the middle of the 13th century.

The original Slavic settlement in the place of today's Jihlava grew up sometime around 1200. A market village with the church of St. John the Baptist was built along the Haber Provincial Trail, which still commemorates it today. Silver mining expanded here, the population grew, the city grew to the place of the historical center roughly as we know it today. Thanks to the rich silver deposits, Jihlava became one of the richest and most powerful cities in the kingdom, whose pride was to be the town hall.

The first Jihlava Town Hall is documented on the western side of the square – between the streets of the Mother of God and Benešová. Later it moved to a Gothic stone building with an arcade on the eastern side of the square. Over the centuries, the town hall underwent construction modifications, another house was attached to it and there was a guardhouse, an armoury, a city prison and a wine bar. In the 16th century, the town was affected by devastating fires and then significant changes and repairs of not only the town hall buildings in the Renaissance spirit followed. The façade of both houses was unified and given a clock turret. An important and still noticeable change in the town hall complex is the Renaissance courtroom, which served as a police guardhouse from 1862 to 1928. In the 18th century, the town hall underwent Baroque modifications and was extended by another house dating from the 13th century. The disparate set of three houses was therefore modified as a single unit. In the 20th century, the construction development of the town hall was completed.
Between 2004 and 2006, a major reconstruction of the Town Hall on Masaryk Square 1 and 2 took place.
