The house where the composer and conductor Gustav Mahler spent a part of his childhood. Today it is his monument and gallery.
Jihlava was the childhood place of the world-famous composer and conductor Gustav Mahler, born in 1860 in Kaliští near Humpolec. In the first year of his life, the family moved to Jihlava, to a house in Znojemská Street No. 4. Mahler's father later opened a bar there and devoted himself to the production and sale of brandy, sweet liqueurs and jelly. Later he bought the neighboring house No. 6. Both houses with preserved Renaissance vaults are now protected as monuments.
On 19 June 1960, a memorial plaque by the academic sculptor Milan Knobloch was unveiled on the Gustav Mahler House (No. 4) on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Gustav Mahler's birth. You can visit the permanent exhibition Young Gustav Mahler and Jihlava, which maps the composer's school years, the beginnings of his musical career and his family background, including his marriage to Alma Mahler, 19 years his junior. The exhibition also mentions Czech-German-Jewish relations in Jihlava.
Other exhibitions are dedicated to the sculptor Jan Koblas and his work on the monument and park of Gustav Mahler in Jihlava and Jihlava native, artist and fashion designer Thee Weltner.
For families with children there is a musical relaxation room, interactive screens and video projections.
The gallery of the Gustav Mahler House hosts short-term exhibitions, cultural events and educational programs.
