Jihlava was the childhood home of the world-famous composer and conductor Gustav Mahler, born in 1860 in Kaliště near Humpolec. In the first year of his life, the family moved to Jihlava, to a house at 4 Znojemská Street - today's Gustav Mahler House. Mahler's father later ran a taproom there and was engaged in the production and sale of brandy, sweet liqueurs and jelly.
