Gustav Mahler Park
Benešova Street
586 01 Jihlava
A place where the landscape meets the city.
The statue of the composer Gustav Mahler by the academic sculptor Jan Koblasa is the central element of the park. The stone sculptures of birds and fish around symbolize Mahler's musical work. Ten water sprays by the pond indicate the number of Mahler's symphonies.
The architectural composition of the park is conceived as a contrast of the landscape with the city. Water and undulating grassy areas, in addition to sharply shaped forms and stone elements, meet the history of the place – the area of the fortification parkan, the line of the city walls and the uncovered foundations of the burned synagogue. The view from above is offered by a view in the historical bastion of fortifications.
The ceremonial opening of the Gustav Mahler Park and the unveiling of the composer's monument took place in the presence of the President of the Republic, Václav Klaus, on July 7, 2010, the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth.
