The three-kilometre long fortification still preserves a strip of walls in Baroque form and the rest of the moat.

The royal mining town of Jihlava as an important economic centre with a strategic location on the border of Bohemia and Moravia was of considerable military importance. The walls around it were therefore built shortly after its foundation in the first half of the 13th century.

The original three-kilometer fortification consisted of an internal fortification wall 6 meters high, a wide parkan with a parkan wall and a moat up to 7 meters deep. The main fortification wall was reinforced by towers, in the parkan belt there were bastions that strengthened the wall in front of the moat. The walls were broken by five gates with complex forebreaks and drawbridges.

Over the centuries, with the development of military technology, the entire fortress system was constantly improved. In 1755 the Jihlava fortress was abolished, parts of the fortifications were dismantled and the towers were turned into dwellings. In the 1st half of the 19th century, gates were demolished, whose narrow passages prevented developing traffic. Of the five gates , the Gate of the Mother of God has been preserved as the only one.

The preserved strip of walls is reconstructed according to the Baroque appearance from the 17th century, the parkan is landscaped in the park. The last preserved remnant of the fortification moat can be seen in Věžní Street.
