OGV — Square

The founding of the gallery was prompted in 1948 by the gift of Marie Kovaříková, who donated her lifetime collection of 78 paintings and 1 sculpture to the town. The gallery was established in a house on Masaryk Square.

After several moves, the current gallery in Jihlava is housed in two buildings. In Komenského Street you can admire the collection of Czech art of the 20th century. The building on Masaryk Square houses an exhibition of Czech art of the 19th and 20th centuries as well as smaller exhibitions on art and the region.

The house on Masaryk Square, originally Gothic, was rebuilt after fires in the 16th century. It has a typical ground floor, a deep three-bay building originally consisting of an entrance hall, a black kitchen and a passage to the courtyard. The mirrored vaulting with cut-outs around the perimeter is valuable and unique in the urban environment.

The house in Komenský Street was built by joining two neighbouring, probably also Gothic, houses in 1864. It has a preserved Renaissance portal. In the upper storey hall, which forms the central part of the house, there are 8 figures of angels on the vault and a star with rays shines at the top of the vault. Six angels play various musical instruments (horn, trumpet, lute, triangle, flute and guitar).
