The history of Jihlava, silver mining and the natural riches of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands

The exposition of the Highlands Museum is dedicated to the historical heritage of Jihlava and the natural wealth of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. In the underground part of the museum there is an exposition dedicated to silver mining and coinage in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, which will interest both children and adult visitors.

House No.58, which houses the Museum of the Highlands, is one of the most prominent monuments of the Jihlava Renaissance. A wide doorway leads into a single-storey mausoleum with a unique transverse rib made of baked clay. In the mezzanine in the central part of the house there is a two-storey covered hall divided by an arcaded loggia with Tuscan columns and consoles. The original internal layout of both houses was altered by Baroque and Classical alterations in 1836 and modern alterations in 1951.Both houses were renovated between 1951 and 1953 to serve the needs of the museum.

The originally Gothic houses No. 57 and 58 were substantially rebuilt in the Renaissance. Two-storey covered halls were built in the central parts of the houses. Building 57, known as the 'House of the Masters', retains many Gothic architectural features. The indoor hall is probably the oldest in the town (around 1570), as evidenced by its simple shape. However, there are also remarkable remnants of the original Renaissance paintings - the figure of Methuselah, the patron saint of soukmen, the figure of Justitia, the goddess of justice, etc. The adjacent room on the first floor with its original wooden panelling is also unique.

The museum association was founded in Jihlava in 1892. The museum has branches in Telč, Třešt' and Roštejn Castle. The museum manages and makes available natural history and historical collections, mostly from the Highlands region.

Permanent expositions of the museum: silver mining and coinage in Jihlava, Mineral Resources of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, Geology of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, Living Nature of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, Protected Areas of the Jihlava Region, Lapidarium, Jihlava - the City of Central Europe (from the Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution) and Beauty of Medieval Sculpture.

The museum building allows wheelchair access to the 1st floor
