One of the oldest preserved buildings in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, where miners' processions traditionally began.
The church was built shortly before 1200, as evidenced by the discovery of the Romanesque foundations of the presbytery. Originally it was the centre of a market village, which gradually lost its importance after the town was founded on the opposite bank of the river.
The Hussite wars damaged the church very badly. Only the baptismal font and the alms column have been preserved. The present appearance of the church is the result of a Baroque reconstruction.
The famous Jihlava mining parades started at the church. The first one was in 1799 and in 1890 it was renewed by J. Haupt.
