Baroque pearl of Polná

The monumental building on Hus Square in Polná is the dominant feature of the town, alongside the castle and the chateau. It is one of the most beautifully decorated church buildings in the Czech Republic.

The largest of the four churches in Polen was built in 1700-1707 according to the plans of the Italian master Dominik de Angeli on the site of the former Gothic church of the Mother of God, which was demolished in 1699 for this purpose. The construction of the Marian church was directed by the Italians Jan and Pietro Spinetti.

The building has the plan of a three-aisled basilica, the tower reaches a height of 63.5 m. The interior is decorated with rich stucco and fresco decoration, which is evidence of the perfect work of Florentine masters.

The unique large Baroque organ, the work of David Sieber from 1708, is probably the largest surviving Baroque organ made in the Czech lands. It is complemented by a smaller, very rare belt-driven organ from the late 16th century.

The Church Museum is a part of the church.
